What is a Birthmark?

There are two main categories of moles: red moles and colored moles. A red mole is a type of vascular (vascular) mole. Pigmented moles are areas where the color of the mole is different from the color of the rest of the skin.

What is a red mole?

Red dots are vascular (vascular) marks on the skin that appear before or shortly after birth. Red moles are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels.

What are the causes of nevus pigmentosa?

The cause of pigmented moles is unknown. However, the amount and location of melanin (the substance that determines skin color) determine the color of a mole. Latte spots can be a normal type of birthmark, but if the latte spots are a quarter or more, it could be a sign of neurofibromatosis (a genetic condition that causes abnormal growth of cells in nerve tissue ). Moles occur when skin cells grow in clumps instead of spreading through the skin. These cells are called melanocytes and form the pigment that gives the skin its natural color. Spots can appear after sun exposure, during adolescence, and during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of pigmentation?

Pigmented moles can grow larger as the child grows, change color (especially after sun exposure and during adolescence when hormone levels fluctuate), and can itch and sometimes bleed.

What are the symptoms of red moles?

Symptoms of red moles include:

  • Skin tags that appear before or shortly after birth
  • red rash or inflammation
  • marks on the skin resembling blood vessels
  • Possibility of bleeding
  • cracked skin

How are red moles diagnosed?

In most cases, healthcare professionals can identify red spots based on the shape of the skin. Deeper spots can be confirmed with imaging tests such as MRI, ultrasound, CT scan, or biopsy.

How are colored moles diagnosed?

In many cases, a specialist doctor can diagnose a mole based on the shape of the skin. If necessary, a skin biopsy can be done.

How are colored moles treated?

In most cases, the mole itself does not require treatment. However, if a mole requires treatment, treatment will depend on the type of mole and the condition associated with it. Large or prominent marks that affect appearance and self-esteem can be masked with special cosmetics.

If the birthmark affects your appearance or if you are at high risk of cancer, it can be surgically removed.

What are the complications of pigmentation?

If the moles are prominent, some complications of pigmented moles may include psychological effects. Pigmented moles increase the risk of skin cancer.

Your doctor should look for changes in the color, size, or texture of birthmarks or other skin lesions. Get medical help right away if you have pain, bleeding, itching, inflammation, birthmarks, or other skin lesions.
